I will happily describe myself as an Aries because it's true on many fronts. I was born April 13th, so just towards the end of the timescale that runs March 21 - April 20 but I'm also relatively typical of the traits of an Aries.

I can be adventurous, energetic, optimistic and confident but also self-centered, short-tempered, impulsive and impatient (but I never hold a grudge - I forgive and forget). I like to think I'm a pretty friendly person, and I have no tolerance for injustice. I do put myself first - but I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. Oh, and if you're looking for subtlety or diplomacy, I'm not your gal! I can talk for England - possibly Europe, I live very much in the moment and I will go and get what it is I want. See impatience; no time for waiting for it to come to me! I do not like insincere flattery - or the spelling of insincere.. is that even correct?

I'm definitely very passionate and now that I've met Jade Rachel I definitely believe in a love that can last forever. I'm not especially jealous or possessive though, which is are typical traits, but then I'm confident in our relationship.

Now, in the Chinese Zodiac, I was born in the Year Of The Rabbit. Rabbits tend to be gentle, quiet, elegant, and alert; quick, skillful, kind, and patient; and particularly responsible. However, they might be superficial, stubborn, melancholy, and overly-discreet. Generally speaking, people who belong to the Rabbit zodiac sign have likable characters.

I think that meshes very well with the traits of an Aries and is actually a relatively accurate overview of my personality.

Brody (my twin) on the other hand? Could not be less of an Aries if he tried! OK so yes he's stubborn and impatient and impulsive but he's not got the confidence. He's much quieter, keeps to himself but notices everything. He's a lot more Rabbit than Ram!

comments

Jade Rachel & I were watching Top Gun earlier. It's one of her favourite movies and neither of us can believe how long its been since the film premiered. 30 years next week. Some parts of it have dated, some parts of it are now nostalgic in their 80s-ness. It's still a damn good film though - and I must say that Tom Cruise in it still makes my heart go aflutter.

I adored him back in the mid-80s. I err on the side of caution in calling it his prime, per se, because he is still making some pretty awesome movies. But my favourites of his were all from that time - the mid 80s-mid 90s:
Top Gun, Cocktail, Legend, Born On The Fourth Of July, Rain Man, The Colour Of Money, Days Of Thunder, A Few Good Men, The Firm, Interview With The Vampire, Mission Impossible, Jerry Maguire...
*sigh*

Regan walked in while we were watching and just rolled her eyes. It's such an old, dated movie. Starring that scientology freak. Or so she tells us.
But will she still be swooning over Zac Efron in High School Musical in 20 years time?

comments

One of the things I still find most bizarre about having a step-daughter in her late teens, and one who is very smart at that, is some of the more peculiar conversations we have. This evening it was about the demography and diversity of the population in London.

For a little bit of context, Regan is starting a degree in socio-anthropology in the autumn so for her at least this is not that peculiar a topic - it's simply her area of interest.

We were talking about all the different nationalities and languages we encounter, travelling by public transport everyday. Curiosity struck and I decided I might as well share some of the facts we learned.

Contrary to seemingly-popular belief, the largest ethnic group in London is 'White' with 59.79% of respondents in 2011 census. Over half the population of London identify as white. And the majority of these (44.89%) are 'White-British'.
Asian/Asian-British come in at 18.49%, Black/Black-British at 13.32%, 'Mixed' at 4.96% and 'Other' (including Arab) at 3.44%
Clearly, London is being over-run with foreigners, just like shock media would want you to believe...

The census also recorded that 36.7% of Londoners are foreign born - with 24.5% being born in a non-European country. London has the second highest immigrant population in the world.
Although, that's still only marginally over 1/3 being foreign born.

We then looked into languages.
77.9% of the population spoke English as a main language, with a further 19.8% speaking it as a second language or well to very well. That's a total of 97.7% for those playing along at home. Yes, we're being so taken over by foreigners that don't speak English that... oh.. only 2.3% of Londoners don't have English as first or second languages.
In fact, only 0.6% of those surveyed didn't speak English at all. Not quite 2500 people out of a population of over 8 million.
The main languages, other than English, spoken here are Polish, Bengali, Guajarati, French, Urdu, Portuguese, Turkish and Spanish. Arabic is the 10th most common language with a grand total of 0.9% of the population.

The last thing we looked at was religion. And, like me, 48% of Londoners identify as Christian. The second most stated was 'no religion' at 20.73, with Muslim coming in third at 12.39%.
The remaining 18.88% was made up of 'not stated', Hindu, Jewish, Sikh, Buddhist and, like Jade Rachel, 'other'.

I found all this absolutely fascinating to learn about to be honest with you. I love the diversity of the population of this city and was actually quite surprised by a lot of those figures. It just goes to show you the difference between the truth and what popular media wants you to believe.

comments

I discovered today there are a couple of guys in our IT department who play Dungeons & Dragons, and have spent this afternoon trying to convince me to join them. Not really my kind of thing but their passion was definitely enjoyable.

They were trying to decide what alignment I would be. I looked at them very blankly because quite frankly, I didn't have a clue. Possibly they were speaking Klingon...

But no, it seems your character's alignment is central to a D&D character's personality. D&D uses two measures to determine a specific character's ethical and moral attitudes and behaviour.

The moral axis has three positions: good, neutral and evil. Good characters generally care about the welfare of others. Neutral people generally care about their own welfare. Evil people generally seek to harm the others' welfare.

The ethical axis has three positions as well: lawful, neutral, and chaotic. Lawful people generally follow the social rules as they understand them. Neutral people follow those rules find convenient or obviously necessary. And chaotic people seek to upset the social order and either institute change, or simply create anarchy.

For some reason I actually agreed to take this... personality test type thing that would tell them about my character's view of right and wrong.
And the survey said:
Chaotic Good

A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he’s kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit.
Sounds pretty accurate, actually. Although you still won't find me playing Dungeons & Dragons! ;)

comments

I have the strangest desire to be sitting on a beach; somewhere tropical, with clear blue skies, translucent water, golden sand beneath me. A book in one hand and a cocktail in the other.

Unfortunately, there's so much wrong with that image I don't even know where to begin!
I hate beaches, sand getting everywhere and making everything all gritty.
Hot sun? I'll turn into a lobster.
Cocktail? I'd rather an ice-cold bottle of beer.
And I couldn't sit still for five minutes without getting bored, getting up and wanting to do something. How do people do it? Lay there for hours cooking themselves? How are they not bored?

So I have no idea where this daydream came from. I suspect it isn't mine so if you've lost it, let me know and you an come and pick it up...

Where would I rather be?
I'd like to be wandering the streets of Amsterdam. It houses more historic buildings than any other city in the world and it has one of the largest historic city centres in Europe, consisting of 90 islands linked by 400 bridges. Most of its historic buildings and streets have remained unchanged since the 19th century, due to the fact that there was no major bombing in the city during World War II.

Where am I?
London. Some relax you, easing away stress and anxiety; others are revitalising and will gee you up for that important meeting.

Follow your nose

Oils that smell very similar often have very different effects. Lemon is a stimulant, yet lemongrass is a sedative. Rosemary and peppermint on the other hand, smell nothing alike, but both are excellent for fatigue.

Orange, which reminds of us of the sun, produces an oil that will brighten your mood and complexion

Scent and associations

Smell is the most primitive of our senses, and the one that is most closely linked to our memories and emotions.

When we think of our mother's kitchen or a beautiful day at the seaside, heir smells are often the first thing that springs to mind. We can use these memories when choosing aromas to create specific moods.

Fond memories
As scents are linked to your memories, not everyone will enjoy the same aromas. Lavender is often considered uplifting but if it reminds you of your crotchety old grandmother it is unlikely to relax you!

Luckily, as most conditions can be eased by a number of different oils, there will always be a right one for you

Woody smells that remind us of the outdoors can be helpful in easing away urban stress. Strengthen the association in your mind by burning incense coils in your garden on calm summer evenings

comments

You will notice the difference immediately. As you smell the relaxing fragrance of the oil surrounding you, its peacefulness and tranquillity will lift your spirits, promote relaxation and soothe stress.

Aromatherapy is the art of healing with 'essential' oils - distilled essences that have been extracted from plants. These can be used in massage and inhalation techniques, added to bathroom products such as soap, skin creams, bath gel and shampoo, and also used to create room fragrances.

Aromatherapy also involves the use of incense (in loose,, powdered form or as joss sticks), pot pourri, steam inhalations, scented candles, and fresh flowers. You can use all of the above to raise your mood, treat ailments and improve your sense of wellbeing

How it works

Through the nose
When we smell a fragrance, we take its healing molecules into our bodies.
Today has been a day of lists. Sometimes I'm able to organise myself, sometimes I need to write a to-do list... and some days I need multiple ones. Today has definitely been one of the latter. Between going on holiday with Jade Rachel earlier in the month and the long weekend we've just had for Easter I've been feeling more than a little discombobulated.

I am now feeling a litle accomplished so I'm taking a moment to celebrate a couple of small victories. Go me!

I still need to chase a couple of content writers. Deadline is Thursday and I've heard nothing from them. Feeling a little concerned.

I would love to go to the cinema. I want to see Batman Vs Superman. As does Jade Rachel so I'm thinking date night (if we can get a babysitter). Jade Rachel and Caden Bryce also want to see Zootopia.
I'm really hoping superheroes win here!

I need to do laundry. I hate doing laundry. He’s quite literally my other half.

My parents, however, disowned me when I came out as bisexual in my early 20s. I haven’t spoken to them for over 15 years.

I graduated from University Of The Arts in London in 1997 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art & History of Art, and I completed my MA Digital Arts (Visual Arts) in 2014 through Camberwell College of Arts in London.
I work for The Flight Centre as a Graphic Designer although most of my job revolves around usability and layout of company literature – both internal and external

As well as a passion for art, I’m fascinated by Psychology and Philosophy and am seriously thinking about completing some kind of course around them.

I met my wife Jade Rachel in 2010 and we have been married since 30 March 2015. We have two children, Regan who is 17, and Caden Bryce who is 5.

That’s the serious stuff out of the way:
I believe in God.
I drink too much coffee (and vodka) and eat too much take out (and chocolate).
I support Arsenal FC
I love Disney movies
My favourite band is The Beatles, my favourite movie is Casablanca, my favourite colour is red, my favourite author is JRR Tolkien and my favourite painter is Leonardo Da Vinci

comments

Sometimes it's amazing how fast time goes by. It's like life has started rushing by like it's trying to break a land-speed record and I'm scared it's going to pass me by and I'm going to miss it.

How is it possible that we're coming up to Jade Rachel & I's first wedding anniversary? I still remember the first moment I saw her and that was six years ago now. SIX YEARS.
Note to self: what are you going to do to celebrate this?

How is it possible that Regan is 18 this year. 18, driving, (hopefully) leaving home and going to university. And Caden Bryce is 5. I was there when he was born, this tiny little wrinkled baby and he's now this exuberant 5 year old who loves cars and monkeys and lego and counting.

I feel like I blinked and half a decade has gone by. I remember how long the six-week school holidays felt as a child, stretching out into this foreverness of freedom. And now it's almost March - weren't we just celebrating Christmas?

Can we please slow time down a little so I don't miss anything?

comments

I'm relatively certain that a lot of people who read this blog also read my step-daughter reganoutloud's blog and will have already heard the news but I feel the need to write a proud mother post. Because Regan, my sweet baby girl, has been accepted into her first choice university. Providing she gets the exam results she's predicted - and she's predicted higher than she needs - she will be leaving us in the Autumn, and moving almost as far away from us as is possible and still actually be on the mainland UK. From London to Aberdeen. Hope she's got her thermals and electric blanket packed!

I am a little sad at that, at the thought of her leaving the nest but at the same time, I am so so SO proud of what she's achieved.

The last couple of years haven't been easy for her. Her mum died, Jade Rachel had a breakdown and Regan ended up living with her father. Not that living with her dad was at all a bad situation just completely different to everything she'd experienced at that point. It took Jade Rachel a couple of years to pull herself back together, get back to London, regain custody of Regan. And then Regan had to cope with moving a couple of times while they found the right house.

And then there was me. It cannot have been easy for her to have me come into her life, to have her other mum falling in love with someone else. Neither Jade Rachel or I will ever replace Regan's mum Shaine, and nor would we want to. We make sure she's still part of Regan's life, as much as we can. Regan also had to cope with not being an only child anymore and having this baby, then toddler, around.

She didn't only cope, she excelled and she blossomed. I have had such a pleasure watching her grow from a smart tween to this intense young woman. Have I mentioned I'm really fucking proud of her?

comments

Today's Daily Prompt asks Reincarnation: do you believe in it?

The simple, easy, answer is NO.
I believe we are sent to a temporary heaven or hell, to await the final resurrection, the final judgment, and then the finality of their eternal destination

Allow me to explain:

The Bible tells us that after death, good souls/spirits are taken to heaven, because their sins are forgiven by having received Christ as Savior (John 3:16, 18, 36). For believers, death is to be “away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). However, passages such as 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 describe believers being resurrected and given glorified bodies. I believe our souls/spirits go to be with Christ immediately after death and our physical body remains in the grave “sleeping.” At the resurrection of believers, the physical body is resurrected, glorified, and then reunited with the soul/spirit. This reunited and glorified body-soul-spirit will be the possession of believers for eternity in the new heavens and new earth (Revelation 21-22).

For those who are not worth to be reunited with Christ, death means everlasting punishment. However, similar to the destiny of believers, I believe they are also sent temporary holding place, to await their final judgment, and eternal destiny. Luke 16:22-23 describes a rich man being tormented immediately after death. Revelation 20:11-15 describes all the unbelieving dead being resurrected, judged at the great white throne, and then being cast into the lake of fire. However, even though they are not instantly sent to the lake of fire, their immediate fate after death is not a pleasant one. The rich man cried out, “I am in agony in this fire” (Luke 16:24).

comments

I am terrible at keeping secrets. It's probably my worst habit. I've always been like it, and assumed, when I was younger, that it's something I'd learn to do as I got older. I'm now in my 40s and now, I still cannot keep a secret.

It's probably related to how much I talk. I'm really good at talking! Brody says it's my best talent and that I was born kissing the Blarney Stone. Cheeky fucker!
When we were younger, I would tell him everything - and he, me. I think it just grew from there, that I have some biological imperative to share wi
th everything with the people I'm closest to.

Despite talking a lot, I am really really bad at lying. And keeping a straight face is pretty much impossible. Blushing gives me away so easily, and fidgeting with whatever is near to me. Sometimes that Freud was scarily right.
"No mortal can keep a secret. If his lips are silent, he chatters with his finger-tips; betrayal oozes out of him at every pore"

'Dont tell anyone' are the most horrifying words anyone can say to me. If Jade Rachel is planning a surprise for the kids, she can't tell me because I get so excited about it I want to just blurt it out. I am getting better at thinking before I speak but really, I'm no good at keeping my lips sealed.

My life is very much an open book to my loved ones. They know pretty much everything about me. I have nothing to hide. And you know what? I like to think that being truthful, open and honest are very positive personality traits to have - my friends certainly think so and really, that's all I need.

comments

I've had this blank 'about me' page for my website open all morning with the cursor flashing at me but I haven't been able to get any further than Hi, I'm Eireann. That's usually all I say to start with. I've never really sat down to introduce myself at length before. I can tell you why you should hire me, but that's not really appropriate here.

I then decided to do what all self-respecting people do when they need to do something they don't know how to do. I asked Google. But Google just wanted to tell me about how to get paid for blogging, or how to write a professional about me page for a corporate site. Again, not really my intention here.

Google was, however, very insistent that this page is very important and should be interesting, original, unique.
So, I shouldn't just go
Hi, I'm Eireann.
In some respects, I am a walking cliche. One of those is that I am a huge fan of The Beatles.

And my favourite song? It has to be Hey Jude.
Just thinking about the song makes me smile and has it going round and round inside my head.
I'm sitting here now, humming to myself.

I love the story behind the song. How it originated as 'Hey Jules', that Paul wrote it for Julian Lennon when John and Cynthia were getting a divorce. How Julian didn't find out for over 20 years and how he bought the recording notes at auction.

Can you imagine how touching it must feel to know someone cared about you so much to write you a song to help you through a shitty time?

Some of my other favourite Beatles tracks, in case you were wondering, include All You Need Is Love, Come Together, Yellow Submarine, Penny Lane, Eight Days A Week and From Me To You.

My favourite non-Beatles song is probably Layla by Derek & The Dominoes or Baba O'Reilly by The Who.

comments

I sometimes get nervous over how the little domestic moments really warm my heart. I probably shouldn't, considering how long Jade Rachel and I have now been together, but I'm always terrified that if I just let go and enjoy life, that if I stop paying attention, it's all going to come crashing down around me. I know I'm not the easy person to be in a relationship with, I try, oh god I try and she has endless patience and I love her for it.

This morning was one of those moments where I forgot to think and just let myself... enjoy the moment, for lack of a better way of putting it.

I was stretched out on the couch, reading and listening to The Beatles. Jade Rachel was cross-stitching and Caden Bryce was playing with his cars. It would seem that little boy loves Hey Jude, because he stopped and he got up and started dancing, which was one of the most adorable things I think I've seen. It was only topped by what happened next - Jade Rachel got up and started dancing with him, both of them sliding across the floor in just their socks, and little boy giggles are always heartwarming and could probably solve war or something.

Naturally, I got a video of the whole thing, and will file it away in the 'things to embarass Caden Bryce with when he brings home a girl/boyfriend in the future'

Or, there was video until he decided I had to come dance too. Only the three of us just got in each others ways and ended up in a very comfy tangle of limbs on the floor.
♥

comments

I know it's not the healthiest thing in the world, but is there anything better than having a piping hot, greasy, pepperoni pizza delivered to you door? This post is brought to you by the fact that this has just happened, and by the reproachful looks I'm sure the lovely Jade Rachel will e shooting me.

I'm the first to admit I eat far too much junk food, order way too many takeaways. but damnit it tastes good! I don't cook, don't have the interest or patience. I know plenty of people, such as badfalcon who cook themselves a meal from scratch every single day. I don't know how how they do it. It's not even a time thing, I have plenty of time... I just don't see the point, to be quite frank, when I can pop a meal in the microwave or pick up the phone and order something!

comments

I've seen one of those meme things floating around on facebook lately about the nature of friendship, and it made me simultaneously laugh and realise how true and strange it actually is.

You've probably seen the meme I mean, a quote attributed to Bill Murray: Friendship is so weird... you pick a human you've just met and you're like "yep, I like this one" and you just do stuff with them

It's true how that works though. When you're small, you don't really care who another child is as long as they play with you. But then as you grow older, friends have the same interests. And then hormones and teenage angst and cliques and all that shit kicks in - really how did any of us survive our teens to become productive memebers of society?

I don't think I've ever had difficulty making friends - I'm a chatterbox and can generally find something to talk to anyone about. That's not to say I've always had a ton of friends, it was probably the opposite in school. I wasn't in the 'cool crowd', I wasn't one of the girls that others 'had' to be friends with. But I had the best group of friends, at least in my opinion.

I'm just now trying to master the art of connecting with people online. A new medium of friendship, but I don't think it's going to be too different to in real life, just striking up conversation and seeing how it goes!

comments

I think the main reason I struggle with blogging is that I never know what to blog about. The amount of times I've opened up this 'post an entry' page and stared at it, not knowing what to say. The minutae of my day aren't exactly exciting or interesting to joe public. Yet, having said that, I find the daily lives of other people to be fascinating so I guess that makes me a huge hypocrite.

I don't know what I want to get out of blogging. I know a lot of people use it cathartically, to work through things that are going on in their lives, but I don't have anything like that. My life is pretty damn good. I have Jade Rachel and the kids, I have my flat, I have my job and I'm doing my Masters. I've recently started talking to my twin brother again after... a few years.

Yet I still feel that urge to journal.

I don't really write book reviews, or cook. I don't write poetry or short stories. I don't make graphics. I can't really think of anything that I'm crazy about enough to make a themed blog.

Can you recommend me any blogging prompt sites? Either on dreamwidth or elsewhere?

comments

Today I am ostensibly working from home. If you take 'working by home' to mean 'watching Doctor Who with the kids*'. vanillamagick has a hospital appointment this morning - nothing serious, don't worry - one of those appointments that takes 6 months to get. Of course, normally that wouldn't be a problem because Regan would have been at school and she'd have taken Caden Bryce to the hospital with her. Except poor Regan has a chest infection and is off school sick. I didn't want Jade Rachel to miss her appointment so I've stayed at home with them.

I'd forgotten how much I loved the new-Who when it first started. Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. The poor Ninth Doctor, his love for apes and Rose's adventure of a lifetime. Slitheen. Daleks. Captain Jack. Daleks. Autons. Cassandra. Bad Wolf.

I'd like to remain off work long enough to marathon all of new-Who, Torchwood and Sarah Jane. And maybe all of classic Who as well. I'm sure work won't mind if I explain my need to re-watch, right? haha

Speaking of the kids, Regan's joined Dreamwidth and her account is glitterangel so please be gentle with her!

* There really needs to be an easier way to say 'my girlfriend's son and step-daughter', but there isn't so 'my kids' will have to suffice!

comments

I have itchy feet, or maybe it's spring fever. I feel like I've been in one place for too long. The same apartment. The same job. The same hair style. The same wardrobe.

I caught myself looking at jobs overseas, wondering what it would be like to just up and go somewhere, anywhere, that isn't here. Just relocate and do something different, somewhere different. A complete blank slate. A chance for new everything.

It's such an exciting prospect.
Not one that I can actually do though. A few years ago, I would have just done it. Just picked up and gone. But now? Not so much. For once, I actually have ties, a reason to stay. (Of course, if Jade Rachel was willing to relocate with me, that would be a different matter).

A change is as good as a break. Maybe I need to redecorate, or look around at different apartments. Send my resume out to a few places. Go to a hair salon and get a new hair cut and/or colour. Buy myself new clothes. Get a make over.

Or just go on holiday... somewhere that's not dreary and grey. That sounds nice. Where's nice this time of year?

comments

No really, this is actually a post about bagels. I don't really know why, other than the fact that prior to breakfast this morning, I hadn't had one in ages and since I enjoyed it so much, I figured it would make a fairly good point for my blog post.

I've mentioned that I'm completely random at times, yes?

Regan was at her fathers house and Caden Bryce was still asleep, so Jade Rachel and I were able to have a nice relaxing lie-in, some lazy morning sex and a shower. Followed by a late breakfast and we had bagels. A nice plain bagel, toasted just right, so the outside was crunchy and the inside was golden. And it was filled with scrambled eggs, cheese and bacon. With a nice glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

Definitely the perfect way to start the weekend. Can I make it a New Years Resolution to try and start all my Saturday's this way?

comments

If you had told me two year ago that I would be settled down, in a monogamous long-term relationship, with another woman, who had children I would have laughed your head off and probably cussed you out. That was never something that was on my agenda, being settled down, being monogamous. I've always been a bit of a.. well, I guess the term is slut. Different partners each weekend, guys and girls, pick them up on the Friday, fuck them, forget them, repeat at will. Preferably as often as possible.

But then I met Jade Rachel. Who not only had one child (step) but was also pregnant with another. Yes, to start with it was just sex. But I didn't fuck and forget. And the sex kept happening. And then emotions got involved and I realised I was falling in love.

I did't take to it well. I was scared. I.. was not monogamous. Jade Rachel was patient, calm, understanding. We talked and talked and...

Somehow, here we are. Me, Jade Rachel, Regan and Caden Bryce. A family. MY Family. And I wouldn't change it for the world.

I've spent an amazing Christmas with them, with Jade Rachel's family. I'm going to spend New Years with them, which will be perfect. And I'm looking forward to another year with them.

comments
